Humphrey First to Sign Republican Unity Pledge
CONCORD -August 15, 2000 - Republican Party chair Steve Duprey called a meeting of his party's candidates for Governor this morning and asked each to sign a pledge to support whomever wins the Primary on September 12. Former U.S. Senator Gordon Humphrey, who attended the meeting, was the first to sign the pledge. The other candidates sent representatives to the meeting. “I've said repeatedly I will support our party's nominee," Humphrey said. "Today, I put the pledge in writing. I also pledge to stand at that person's side election eve and to attend the party's Unity Breakfast the next morning." Humphrey said lack of party unity hurt the Republicans in the last two elections. "We can't afford disunity," Humphrey said. "That is why I have refused to return the fire directed at me recently by some of my fellow candidates for Governor. I took the Eleventh Commandment not to criticize Republicans, and I won't." "Today, I call upon my colleagues to cease using one another as punching bags," Humphrey said. "I call on each to take the Eleventh Commandment, as I have." Humphrey noted that recent polls show him leading the field of Republican nomination for Governor. "Increasingly, Republican leaders and voters see me as the strongest candidate to face Jeanne Shaheen in November. Yesterday, sixty eight State Senators and Representatives endorsed me, including several senior House and Senate leaders. A week ago, former Manchester Mayor's Beaulieu and Wieczorek endorsed me. Even the Shaheen organization now sees me as a threat. Why else would they be running an untruthful TV ad against me a whole month before the Primary?"
